Digitizing In 2010, while leading the Small Business segment at BBVA, I immersed myself in a transformative initiative to empower small businesses. We realized early on that the future would be a hybrid of both analog and digital experiences.

Our mission was clear: help small businesses establish a robust online presence. We developed innovative solutions, including customizable websites and seamless payment options through partnerships with companies like PayPal and DHL. This integrated ecosystem allowed small businesses to engage customers and manage orders effectively.

The enthusiasm was palpable as thousands of small business owners embraced these digital tools, eager to expand their reach beyond local markets. I recall the vibrant workshops filled with entrepreneurs ready to learn—there was so much energy and optimism!

Yet, we quickly discovered the reality that many businesses were not fully prepared for such a dramatic shift. Challenges around digital literacy and resistance to change emerged, highlighting the hurdles we had to overcome in this transformation journey.

Looking back, the initiatives from 2010 laid the groundwork for the thriving digital businesses of today. Despite setbacks, we learned invaluable lessons that continue to guide our approach as we adapt to new challenges.

Here are four key lessons I’ve carried forward:

1. Convince Stakeholders for New Initiatives: Championing a digital project beyond the existing playbook requires clear communication and a compelling vision that addresses both potential benefits and concerns.

2. Assume the Possibility of Misunderstanding: In any transformative effort, it's crucial to anticipate that not everyone will grasp the vision immediately. Effective communication and continuous education are essential to bridge gaps in understanding.

3. Transform the Team's Mission: Creating a new mission within my team allowed us to reimagine the future of our business segment, aligning our goals with the evolving needs of small businesses in the digital age.

4. Stay Disciplined in Vision, Flexible in Execution: While maintaining a clear vision is vital, flexibility in execution allows us to adapt to real-world challenges and seize emerging opportunities.

As we continue navigating today’s rapidly evolving landscape, especially in the era of AI, we must remain focused on empowering entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive. Together, we can ensure small businesses adapt and flourish in this exciting, AI-driven future!
