Consulting and Learnings: Weaving a Legacy of Humbleness Among Generations

It was a chilly autumn morning in late 2001 when I began my consultancy with Originales Rossie. This moment marked the start of my professional journey in the consulting world, providing me with invaluable lessons in working with entrepreneurs on their path to success.
During my collaboration with Letti Ortiz, the experienced owner of Originales Rossie, we encountered significant challenges that tested the emotional strength and skills of both Letti and her management team. One of the primary challenges was managing cash flow. We conducted a thorough diagnosis that led us to implement a robust system, allowing Letti to gain clear control of her finances, facilitating informed decision-making and alleviating the emotional strain of financial uncertainty.
We also tackled inefficiencies in inventory management, which were causing notable losses. Through an efficient control method, we optimized her stock and improved relationships with suppliers. These operational transformations resulted from communication grounded in trust and mutual respect. However, this also led to a loss of authority among some family members. Fortunately, we established a genuine connection that enabled us to manage resistance to change and agree upon straightforward yet effective solutions.
I reflected on this experience last week during a trip to Chengdu, where I coincidentally met Letti’s grandson, a young entrepreneur seeking raw materials for the business his grandmother had founded. It was heartening to see that the essence of Letti’s work had persisted, adapting to new market challenges. I couldn’t help but think about the relevance of the principles and values that weave through a family business like Originales Rossie.
As I returned to Hong Kong, I pondered the continuity of that legacy. The personal connection we forged during that consultancy was key to building simple yet effective solutions. I also considered the urgency for family businesses to ensure professionalism while maintaining family balance in their operations.
Ultimately, these are the foundations of successful businesses and strong family relationships. The nostalgia of those days at Originales Rossie reminds me that the entrepreneurial journey, while challenging, is filled with opportunities to connect, learn, and grow. I am grateful for every experience that has allowed me to contribute to the success of those around me and for every lesson that has transformed me along the way.
Today, as I continue in the business world, I carry with me not only technical skills but also a deep respect for the valuable blend of the professional and the personal that enriches everything we do.
